Woman' s Casual Clothing
Woman often wore Tunics. Tunics had two parts a inner tunic and an outer tunic. Tunics were long and some had no sleeves. In the picture below you are not able to see the inner tunic because it is below the Stola (outer tunic). Outer tunics were called Stola's. As you could see in the picture below the Stola is the light blue part of the clothing.
Over the Stola's women often wore Palla's. Palla's are like a scarf that they would put on to keep warm. The purple piece is a Palla.
How Clothing was Made
Some women made cloths for their family's. It was of a good women to know how to spin wool or flax and weave her own cloths for her and her family. Wealthy Woman often bought the clothing they made or had their slaves make it for them and the poor women usually did not have time to make clothing for them or their loved ones. Although some women did not make the clothing that they wore they still had clothing that they bought at local shops.
What Ancient Clothing was Made of
Most clothing was made of wool or linen. Wealthy women often wore clothing made of silk imported from India or china. Poor women often wore clothing made of course brown or gray cloth.
Winter Clothing
In the cold weather they would also wear woven socks and stockings and probably mittens they also wore capes, shawls and scarves to keep warm.
Ancient Woman/ Girls footwear
Woman and girl often wore the same types of shoes. They would causally wear shoes made of finer and softer leather. They had high heal like shoes that had thicker soles to make them appear to look taller. Shoes for the winter had cork soles. Some shoes for the wealthy to use on special occasions were decorated with pearls. Some women also had house sandals like slippers that we use today. They also died some shoes to make them their preferred color. Women that could not afford shoes often went barefoot.
Hairdressing Woman's
Roman women's hair is a part of their everyday look that expressed who they were in many different ways. Some women often dyed or bleached their hair to make it blonde or lighter and or wore wigs. Henna was used to dye hair. Celtic women were admired for their natural red brown hair. Dark hair wigs were imported from as far as india, long blonde wigs were also imported. Woman often wore hair pieces like ribbons and hairpins. They also wore their hair in many styles.
Girls Clothing
Girls Clothing was the same as woman clothing. They often wore the inner Tunic and the outer tunic. They usually wore only the inner tunic inside the house. The girls outer tunic was long and belted. Their winter clothing was the same as women's winter clothing.
Girls Hairdressing
Young Girls usually wore their hair in a knot on the back of their neck. Not all of them had knots though, some girls had there curled or straight and had bangs. Roman girls also had accessories to add to their hair. They had hairpins made of ivory, silver, or gold. Not all hairpins were just made out of ivory, silver or gold, they sometimes made hairpins with jewels. They always had their hair carefully done. They had their own combs made.
